  • Plan instruction based on data,

  • Ensure students are systemically and explicitly learning how to break the code of learning reading and writing.

Our 6-12 programming focuses on reading to learn supports.

Educators are taught how to:

  • Use comprehension strategies that support students in going beyond surface-level knowledge of reading

Building strong literacy skills is the foundation of accessing all other content in student’s journey through formal education. Outside of the walls of school, we know that the ability to read and write proficiently impact the outcomes students experience when seeking employment or transitioning to educational opportunities beyond high school.

The National Reading Panel (NRP), in 1997, conducted extensive research that identified key components that must be taught in order to provide effective reading instruction. Since this time period, research continues to support the importance of understanding the of reading.“While there are no easy answers or quick solutions for optimizing reading achievement, an extensive knowledge base now exists to show us the skills children must learn in order to read well. These skills provide the basis for sound curriculum decisions and instructional approaches that can help prevent the predictable consequences of early reading failure.” (NRP, 2000).

Given this knowledge, our professional development services for K-5 specialize in supporting educators in learning and implementing the key components of an effective literacy classroom. Educators are taught how to analyze data, how to plan instruction based on data, and how to ensure students are systemically and explicitly learning how to break the code of learning reading and writing.

For students 6-12, the emphasis shifts from learning to read TO reading to learn. Standards across the nation often includes expectations that students are able to analyze, make claims, reason and defend their thinking based on information they have read. Our professional development equips teachers to use comprehension strategies that support students in going beyond surface-level knowledge of reading to understand the depth and complexity of literature. In addition, our training is content-specific. We understand that students must tackle text differently depending on the content area.

We would be happy to work with your district or school to create a customizable plan in response to your goals, needs and budget.
